Overview Continued

Museum of Atikokan

The Museum of Atikokan showcases a diverse collection that highlights the town’s geological, industrial, and cultural heritage. One of its most remarkable artifacts is a 12,000-year-old barren-ground caribou antler recovered from the bottom of Steep Rock Lake, offering a glimpse into the region’s ancient natural history. Visitors can explore exhibits on the Steep Rock Iron Mine, once one of Canada’s most significant iron-ore operations, as well as displays on logging, rail transport, and local industry that shaped Atikokan’s development. The museum also features a vibrant collection of community artifacts, photographs, and art, preserving the stories of local families, pioneers, and tradespeople. Just outside the museum, the Historical Park houses impressive large-scale relics—including mining machinery, locomotives, and dredge anchors—set in a scenic outdoor display that connects Atikokan’s industrial past to its modern identity as a resilient northern community.
